Melanochromis labrosus

Melanochromis labrosus, commonly known as the Red-Top Hongi, is a stunning African cichlid prized by aquarium enthusiasts for its vibrant coloration and engaging behavior. Males display striking blue-black bodies with bright red or orange markings on the dorsal fin, while females exhibit more subdued yellow and black patterns.

This hardy species thrives in well-established tanks with rocky substrates and plenty of hiding spaces that mimic their natural Lake Malawi habitat. They reach approximately 10–12 cm in length and require moderate to aggressive water flow with stable parameters around pH 7.5–8.5 and temperatures of 24–26°C.

Red-Top Hongis are territorial and best kept singly or in established groups with compatible tank mates. They feed readily on quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, and occasional live or frozen offerings.
